FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

WHAT IS FEA & HOW IS IT USED


FEA is a numerical method for solving problems of engineering and physics. At Code Product Solutions, typical areas of interest are structural mechanics, fluid flow and heat transfer problems. Based on a CAD-drawing of parts or assemblies, FE-models can be generated by subdividing the original geometry into a finite number of interconnected pieces, the so-called Finite Elements. This approach allows to model arbitrary structures with complex shapes. Once such an FE-model is built, design or material changes can be studied easily. This allows to conduct various kinds of design assessments or evaluations of multiple load cases.

VIRTUAL PROTOTYPING

Test. The usage of FEA allows our engineers to gain insights in the behaviour of structural components or even whole assemblies. Typically, the structural performance of parts is assessed regarding stresses or strains. Alternatively, the deformation behaviour constraint by applied boundary conditions and loads can be investigated. Dependent on each project, those assessments can add value in several stages of the product development process. This can be in an early development phase in which mostly first hardware prototypes do not exist or to make improvements after the first production round is on the market.

PROVEN ACCURACY

Since simplifications and restrictions come along in numerical models, simulations are always approximations of reality. To ensure that the gap between simulation and reality is as small as possible, the Code engineers validate their models continuously. This is done by comparing simulation results with experiments and if necessary, models are improved according to this information. This generates confidence and it brings the quality of our simulations to an even higher level, creating the best conditions for future projects.
