WHAT IS CAD?


With Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D models of components or whole assemblies can be created, modified and optimised with the use of computer software. Based on curves, surfaces and solids, digital models can be generated and processed in digital development processes.

In addition to creating computer models, our understanding of the term CAD is wider: CAD additionally covers the development of industrial design, including concept development, ergonomics, and design of mechanisms by considering aspects such as materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances according to application-specific requirements.
 

CAD AND INTEGRATED DESIGN


At Code Product Solutions, CAD & CAE are substantial disciplines within the product development process to provide a fast time to market by reducing the number of costly hardware prototypes significantly. It enables our engineers to master the challenges of bringing together design, processing, and materials leading to an integrated design.

 

During product development, we apply CAD by means of top-down modelling which perfectly complements our CAE-driven design approach. This means, our CAD-team works in parallel with the CAE-team and together jointly iterate the design to an optimum.

Plastic part Design

Our engineering team has vast knowledge about designing and processing with plastics. This makes Code Product Solutions an expert partner for designing products made from plastics. Our design engineers always aim for a plastic-suited design. This means that established design guidelines for plastic parts are applied continuously and that the consequences of design details on the processing are assessed or vice versa. This is done right from the start and this consequently avoids costly processing-related design changes later in the development.

Top-down modelling

Modelling top-down enables our design engineers to create stable and flexible 3D models of parts and assemblies. At the start, a “skeleton”-like architecture including main properties like axis locations, fixations, connections, or mechanisms, is built up. From this architecture, all parts and details are developed. When changes are required, the architecture prevents the whole model from collapsing. This enables both efficiently creating complex models from scratch and flexibility incorporating design modifications in a later stage of the development process.

Flexible modelling techniques

Our customers often strive for high quality “class-A” surfaces. For this reason, we always apply the most suited modelling technique to be sure the quality will be as desired. For aesthetic parts like surface covers we often use freeform surfacing to maximise design freedom. Through this technique, creativity and flexibility are boosted and reflections on the surface of the final product will look smooth, generating a qualitative feeling.For engineering purposes, we commonly use parametric surfacing methods, adding and subtracting basic shapes with precisely defined measurements.

Design of Mechanisms

Including functionalities or complex mechanisms into a design is a discipline on its own. Our design engineers are highly skilled in realising smart mechanisms which are robust and simple to produce at once. This is highly required especially for products to be mass produced. Those mechanisms can be verified immediately by producing prototypes by means of rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D-printing. These prototypes allow to effectively assess the functional ability and the ergonomics of newly designed mechanisms already during the design process.
